In January, CNNMoney reported that a medical job with an annual salary of $120 and a two-year term of four years at $140,000 a year could earn $1,400 a month.
The job would be the second-highest paid in the U.S. And yet, it pays $2,700 less a month than a job in the same field, according to CNNMoney.
And it’s the only one of the top five.
But a career with a four-year and $140-a-year salary will pay more than a one-year job at a similar salary.
“It’s very easy to compare the medical profession and the job market.
The medical profession is highly competitive,” said Jeff Ruch, senior vice president at the American Medical Association, which represents the country’s biggest doctors.
“There’s a lot of great people working in medicine.
And there’s a huge pool of qualified applicants.”
The pay gap is even greater in the public-sector, where the median salary for a medical director at a hospital is $100,000, and the median for a nurse is $75,000.
“We have a much higher-paid public sector workforce, but we’re still behind,” said Scott Lively, chief economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“If you’re a doctor, you’re making more than the average American, and if you’re an accountant, you are making less than the typical American.
There’s a significant difference in pay.
And the median pay gap between doctors and nurses is very large.”
Lively and others say that the pay gap can be explained by the way hospitals pay their employees.
Hospitals pay employees by what they can earn in a given month.
That means that they have to pay out of pocket for some services, such as hospital meals.
If a nurse does well on her salary, that could pay for other, unrelated expenses.
But if a hospital pays a doctor $60,000 in salary, the nurse is expected to spend more on hospital food and other out-of-pocket costs.
“The public health system, which is really the backbone of the public health care system, pays hospitals for their doctors,” said Lively.
“They’re in a tough spot when they have this large pay gap.”
The gap between public- and private-sector doctors also varies widely by geography.
The largest gap is between the states of New York and Massachusetts, where there are about 40,000 and 35,000 doctors each, respectively, according the U,M.
According to the UMass Medical Center, the average salary for New Yorkers is $126,000; the average for Massachusetts is $136,000 (with a 10 percent bonus).
But New York also has the lowest unemployment rate, about 8 percent, compared to nearly 20 percent in Massachusetts.
“In Massachusetts, we have a lot more people than New York,” said Ruch.
“So you have a bigger pool of doctors that are likely to be paid more.”
But if you live in a rural state like Oregon or New Mexico, your pay could be much higher than in other parts of the country.
And if you’ve never been in a hospital, you might not have much choice.
“People are really used to being in hospitals, and that’s not the case in most states,” said John O’Brien, an associate professor of medical administration at the University of Minnesota.
“You can have a job as a nurse or a physician, but you’re not going to have that kind of choice.”
And if you don’t want to work in a public hospital, there are many options.
For example, you could go to a private practice, which means that you pay more in salary and benefits, but not a full-time job.
You could also choose to take a career in private practice or medical school, where you can earn more money.
But those options aren’t always as attractive as they could be, and many employers will only hire you if you qualify for an associate’s degree, the credential that will help you get into the best medical school.
“Those degrees are not always the best option,” said O’Briens.
But there are some other things that can get you to a position where you have an opportunity to work for a public- or private-practice employer.
“I think the biggest thing is having a good track record of work experience,” said Sisley.
“When you have good credentials, you have more confidence in your ability to do the job.”
